Den Haag opnieuw bezien is een schitterend fotoboek bedoeld als een spiegel van de stad en als uitnodiging om haar te bezoeken en er te rond kijken. Den Haag heeft veel te bieden, in ieder seizoen en op ieder tijdstip van de dag. Het boek presenteert een stad die voortbouwt op zijn lange en bewogen geschiedenis, een stad die niet stilstaat. Die presentatie vindt plaats op ‘eigen wijze’, dat wil zeggen dat Piet Gispen Den Haag laat zien zoals hij haar dagelijks ontmoet.

Het boek beoogt niet compleet te zijn in de zin dat het heel Den Haag presenteert; er is zoveel meer te ontdekken. Wel biedt het de kern. Piet Gispen probeert de sfeer, het karakter en de schoonheid van de stad weer te geven, geïnspireerd door Eugène Atget die dat in de vorige eeuw met Parijs deed. Gispen’s foto’s verbeelden de stad zoals hij haar op dat moment ‘ontmoette’, zonder manipulatie.

The Hague Revisited is a beautiful book of photography intended as a reflection of the city and a standing invitation to visit it and to look around. The Hague has many things to see, in all seasons and at each moment of the day. The book presents a city that continues to build upon its long and turbulent history, a city that does not sleep. It is a presentation in ‘its own way’ , i.e. Piet Gispen shows The Hague as he daily meets it, as an inhabitant.

The book does not aim at being complete, that is to say it does not show all of The Hague; there is so much more to discover. It does however offer the city’s core. Piet Gispen tries to capture its ambience, beauty and character, inspired by Eugène Atget’s Paris of early twentieth century. Gispen’s photos reflect what he saw at that moment, unmanipulated, and, if you will, as he ‘met’ the city at that particular moment.
