Sri Pillai, a graduate in philosophy, was at the time employed in the RevenueDepartment of the South Arcot Collectorate.During his visit to Tiruvannamalai in 1902 onofficial work, he went to Virupaksha Cave onArunachala Hill and met the Maharshi there. He sought from him spiritual guidance and solicitedanswers to questions relating to Self-enquiry. AsBhagavan was not talking then, not because ofany vow he had taken but because he did nothave the inclination to talk, he answeredquestions put to him by writing. As recollectedand recorded by Sri Sivaprakasam Pillai, therewere thirteen questions and answers to themgiven by Bhagavan. This record was firstpublished by Sri Pillai in 1923 (in the originalTamil), along with a couple of poems composedby himself relating how Bhagavan’s graceoperated in his case by dispelling his doubts andby saving him from a crisis in life.
