Homo Ludens and No End
Johan Huizinga’s theory of play as set out in his Homo Ludens encouraged many other scholars all over the world to reflect upon play and games in culture. The wish to get an overview of this productive reception is the drive behind this open bibliography (open, because reflection on Huizinga is ongoing and updates will be welcomed in next editions). The compiler is Léon Hanssen, an eminent Dutch cultural historian and writer. Hanssen wrote a dissertation on Johan Huizinga (Huizinga en de troost van de geschiedenis, 1996), several monographs on cultural history, and comprehensive biographies of Piet Mondriaan and Menno ter Braak.
