Cardinal Points is an exhibition catalogue on the works by Steven Aalders presented in The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, based upon the dialogue between the museum’s architect H.P.Berlage and works selected from the museum’s collection. Aalders is pre-eminently an artist who observes and analyses. It is no coincidence that he occasionally writes essays on exhibitions and the work of other artists. On initial consideration, the association with Piet Mondrian speaks for itself. But Aalders’ relationship with other artists goes well beyond the example of Mondrian. He analyses, for instance, the paintings of Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Jan Schoonhoven and Ad Dekkers. Catalogue design by Irma Boom.
