Beda venerabilis
The Venerable Bede may truly be said to be a cultural giant of the early Middle Ages, and he became a standard point of reference for the scholars who came after him. The present collection of new essays aims to put Bede into the most appropriate contexts - historical and literary, English and European - and to shed light on various traditions connected with Bede’s achievement as historian, monk and Northumbrian.
The essays in this volume deal with the following subjects: Bede as Christian Historian; Bede’s Influence at Home and Abroad; Bede and the Irish; Bede and Frechulf at Medieval St Gallen; Beda Hagiographicus: Meaning and Function of Miracle Stories; Bede and Aelfric: the Sources of the Homily on St Cuthbert; A Northumbrian Version of Caedmon’s Hymn; Bede and the Legends of St Oswald.
