Piet Mondriaan (2-delen)

Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) is clearly best known for his abstract paintings with red yellow and blue expanses of colour. Yet in the course of his fascinating life the artist explored many style trends which eventually around 1920 led him to the pure abstraction of Neo-Plasticism. This catalogue of his work is unique in that for the first time it offers a review of the whole of Mondrian's oeuvre from his first figurative paintings right up to his abstract neo-plastic work. This Catalogue raisonné includes a chronological list of exhibitions and an extensive comprehensively illustrated chronology of Mondriaan's life and career. The information on exhibitions literature and provenance has been assembled from a wide study of the original documentary sources supplemented by information acquired from numerous interviews with Mondriaan's contemporaries. The catalogue notes (in English) are chronological; as well as the usual technical data there is a detailed discussion of each work and a black-and-white illustration. The book also contains a register of his work with cross-references to the Seuphor-Ottolenghi catalogue and an index. With financial assistance from the Grant Program of the J. Paul Getty Trust many of the paintings have been re-photographed in colour especially for this book so that full justice can be done to Mondrian's works.
