Peter Bialobrzeski
In the last book of his photographs published by Hatje Cantz, Heimat, Peter Bialobrzeski (*1961) gave us pictures of Germany that showed it, we think, in ways it had never been seen before. ''One of the most beautiful and significant photography books this year,'' wrote PHOTO International, for instance. Yet even before that, Bialobrzeski made a name for himself on the international photography scene with his frequently lauded investigation of the Asian mega city, Neon Tigers. nIn his new project, the photographer explores the transformation of urban non-places, many of them located on the peripheries of cities. The photographs were taken in more than twenty-five cities and twelve countries-including Hamburg, Dubai, New York, Singapore, New Delhi, and Kuala Lumpur-and describe the transition from old to new, from the familiar to the abstract. These images are as seductive as nineteenth-century romantic paintings, yet their apparent beauty is deceptive. As in his earlier works, Bialobrzeski is a master at exploring the profundity of the documentary image.
