Philip Guston
Besides Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston (1913-1980) was one of the most important and influential American artists of the twentieth century. nThe secret motor that powered the development of Guston's extraordinarily multifaceted oeuvre was his drawing, which, unlike his painting, had no particular function from the start. For decades, the immediacy of drawing offered Guston not only the chance to insistently experiment with unsolved issues, but also the ability to stop and reflect, to critically reorient his work. Ultimately, his obsessive preoccupation with drawing also allowed him to master his profound artistic crisis in the late 1960s. nDespite their central position in his work, his drawings have not, up to now, actually attracted the attention they so richly deserve. With a selection of about 100 drawings, most of them from the artist' estate, this publication sheds light on the development of his drawn works from the 1940s to 1980, the year of Guston's death.
