Built between 1887 and 1893, the Manchester Ship Canal is rightly regarded as one of the finest engineering achievements of the Victorian era. Its construction was of vital importance to the industrial growth and economic prosperity of north-west England. Although trade has declined during the last 30 years and the docks in the upper section of the Canal have been swept away in dramatic redevelopment projects, there still remains much of maritime interest.
