Now recognized as one of Germany's most important 20th-century painters, Dix, along with George Grosz, developed the New Objective style of depicting modern life i.e., stripped of superficial appearances and revealing shocking truths which he applied in particular to subject matter associated with the First World War and Wiemar Germany.
