Anne Bårdsgård grew up in Selbu and has always had a connection to Selbu and mitten knitting. With her own yarn and fine needles, together with knitters in Selbu, she has recreated the mitten hand, palm, side bands, top, cuff, thumb gusset, and fingers for mittens and gloves following the old patterns. Knitting Selbu Mittens presents Selbu’s mitten traditions from the 1850’s up to now. The oldest mittens were produced for festive occasions and as fine presents, often given to a bridegroom and his family. Later, mitten production became an important source of income for Selbu, and many tons of mittens were produced here through the years. The patterns eventually became standardized, but, even today new patterns and compositions are being designed. Selbu Mittens is a beautiful book and a treasure chest for knitters. The pattern motifs collected in the book can be combined in countless ways and the process is explained in both text and photos.
