Fluid Mechanics

Fluid Mechanics

The fifth edition of Fluid Mechanics continues the tradition of precision, accuracy, accessibility, and strong conceptual presentation. This new edition retains its basic organization. The three approaches - integral, differential, and dimensional analysis - are treated separately, providing the conceptual foundation of fluid mechanics. Chapters on ducts, immersed bodies, potential flow, compressible flow, open channels, and turbomachinery show the major applications of the field. The new edition includes a systematic problem solving methodology for readers to follow. New chapter examples and approximately 250 new chapter problems have been added. The EES (Engineering Equation Solver) software is included, free to users, as a means to model and solve problems on the computer. A new appendix offers a brief review of mathematical tools.

Fluid Mechanics, by Frank M. White, is praised for its thorough and accurate approach, student-friendly writing style, and its concise yet accessible coverage. This welcome revision has been updated to include over 500 new problems, divided into categories of Applied Problems; Word Problems; FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) Problems; Comprehensive Problems; and Design Projects. Fluid Mechanics, Fourth Edition, has also been given an updated, modern design and now includes many useful pedagogical and motivational aids such as a removable Key Equations Card, opening chapter photos, and an optional EES (Engineering Equation Solver) Problems disk. About the Author Frank M. White is Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island and has studted at both Georgia Tech and M.I.T. In 1996 he helped found, at URI, the first department of Ocean Engineering in the country. Known primarily as a teacher and writer, he has received eight teaching awards and has written four textbooks on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. During 1979-1990 he was editor-in-chief of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and then served 1991-1997 as chairman of the ASME Board of Editors and of the Publications Committee. He is a fellow of ASME, and in 1991 received the ASME Fluids Engineering Award. He lives with his wife, Jeanne, in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
