Awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Estelle Louise Fletcher (July 22, 1934 – September 23, 2022) was an American actress. She also played Helen Rosemond, Sebastian's aunt, in the film Cruel Intentions, and the Bajoran religious figure Kai Winn Adami in the television series Star Trek:
Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). (1999). For her parts in the television programs Picket Fences (1996) and Joan of Arcadia, she received two Emmy Award nominations (2004). Rosie was her last character in the Netflix series Girlboss (2017).
Fletcher's parents were both deaf, and her father was an Anglican priest. She was first exposed to acting by her aunt who she and her hearing siblings spent a whole year and summers after with in order to guarantee that they all learnt to talk. (She famously signed her appreciation to her parents when she collected her Oscar Award.) Fletcher moved to Los Angeles after earning her degree from the University of North Carolina in 1957 and quickly found employment as a guest star on television programs including Perry Mason, Maverick, The Untouchables, Wagon Train, and Bat Masterson.
She appeared in A Gathering of Eagles in 1963, although her part was uncredited. After that, Fletcher made the decision to give up acting so she could focus on her family.
