“Avatar,” (2009), ended with the invading armies, represented by RDA military men, being repelled by the combined strength of the Na’vi clans and Pandora’s animals. Neytiri and Jake assassinated RDA security commander Colonel Miles Quaritch, and all humans were expelled from Pandora except for a few loyalists. Jake Sully took on the role of Olo’eyktan, the chief of the Omaticaya clan, and permanently transferred his consciousness into his Avatar body.

“The Way of Water” begins with a breathtaking montage of Pandora’s wilderness, and Jake Sully’s voiceover informs us that it has been fifteen years since the events of the great war. Jake and Neytiri have found satisfaction in raising their own children, Neteyam and Lo’ak, as well as Kiri and Tuktirey. Kiri is their adopted daughter, and she was born from the comatose Avatar corpse of Dr. Grace Augustine. Spider, the son of the late colonel Quaritch, Miles Socorro, joins the kids as an adopted brother. Spider was not taken home since cryosleep for children was not feasible, and he grew up in Pandora with the Sully children. Despite Jake’s acceptance of him as their adopted son, Neytiri is wary of him because of his paternal heritage. Spider, on the other hand, is more at ease with the Na’vi way of life and suffers from guilt over his father’s actions. Kiri and Mike are very close as adoptive siblings.

When mankind arrives on Pandora in search of retribution, their serene family life is upended. To the couples’ utter amazement and terror, a fleet of human spaceships crashes on Pandora’s wildness, eradicating vast swaths of forest and its share of megafauna. Humanity re-establishes its grasp on the purged land and resumes colonization of Pandora. After a year, we meet Quaritch again, this time in his new “recombinant” form. Quaritch and some of his disciples were discovered to have been revived after death. Their consciousness was transferred to a cloned Avatar body, and as a result, they have all of their prior life’s memories up until the moment they died in their new form. Quaritch is briefed on the current situation of Pandora’s re-takeover, as well as Jake’s orders to guerilla strike teams to waste human resources. Quaritch vows vengeance and prepares to assassinate Jake and lead his men against the Omaticaya clan.
